An alumna of Emory University, Akila-Hetep is a storyteller whose creative intent is to humanize, demarginalze, and recontextualize all representations of persons of color on film.

Having majored in English with a concentration in African-American Literature, she employs her proficiency in composition by crafting narratives that dismantle the monolithic caricatures of blackness that permeate throughout society.

As content strategist, Akila helps to ensure that BWBM curates cinematic pieces that are unabashedly transparent, emotionally compelling, and culturally riveting. Under the helm of BWBM, she intends to advocate for the self-sufficiency of filmmakers of color whose aim is to create art that taps into the humanity of us all.

"Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right. "
